Here at Burns & McDonnell, we love having fun—and when that fun allows us to give back to our community, it's all the more enjoyable.

We recently participated in an annual barbecue contest hosted by the Kansas City Metro chapter of the American Public Works Association as part of their membership drive. A Burns & McDonnell team went head-to-head with area contractors and service firms for the ultimate prize: barbecue bragging rights.

And we're thrilled to report that our team won first place in ribs and second place overall for our barbecue talents! We just may have found a new calling in life.

During the APWA membership drive, we also organized and hosted a dunk tank, with all proceeds benefiting the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross to assist with Joplin relief efforts. Our lucky dunkees included Joab Ortiz, APWA member and member of our Public Involvement Team, and Steve Schmidt, past president of APWA and manager in our Transportation Group. We raised more than $550 at the dunk tank, and we want to thank everyone who participated.

Community involvement is one of our passions, so stay tuned—we'll have more updates on events throughout the summer. And in the meantime, who wants to come over for some barbecue?
